West End classics propel Teatro boy band
By Chris Hastings and Beth Jones
Last Updated: 1:59am BST 01/10/2007

It’s a formula which has worked for countless boy bands from the Backstreet Boys to Boyzone: a musical impresario plucks four strangers from obscurity and thrusts them to the top of the pop charts.

But it won’t be pop songs which propel Teatro, the latest signing by one of Britain’s biggest record labels, Sony BMG, to the top of the charts, but show tunes.

Their eponymously titled debut album, which will be released at the end of October, will contain songs such as Maria from West Side Story; Don’t Cry For Me Argentina from Evita; I Dream a Dream from Les Miserables; and Luck Be A Lady Tonight from Guys and Dolls.

The band, who have been put together by Jonathan Shalit, the man credited with discovering Charlotte Church, are all either classically trained musicians or have West End experience in musicals like Les Miserables and Bombay Dreams.

Record company bosses believe that the current popularity of musical theatre means the time is now right for an assault on the charts.

London’s West End is dominated by musicals such as Billy Elliott, Wicked and Mama Mia with only a handful of playhouses showing straight plays.

The popularity of the art form has been further fuelled by hit television shows such as How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria and Any Dream Will Do.

The band hope they will emulate the success of Il Divo, the opera quartet put together by the musical impressario Simon Cowell, who have now sold 18 million records.

Teatro band member Andrew Alexander, a public school educated graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, said: “To say we are not conscious of Il Divo would be a lie.

“The brand is very similar but we obviously have a very different sound.

“We have not totally reinvented the songs on the album but they do have a slant that hasn’t been heard before. I think why musical theatre hasn’t sold so well in the past is because when you go into a record shop and listen to the tunes they sound quite twangy.”

Paul Gambaccini, the broadcaster and music expert, said he felt the band could do well.

“There’s never been a time when the public hasn’t wanted good recordings of the best show tunes, there’s just been a time when they weren’t considered ‘cool’. It time for someone to do it – I hope these guys do it and do it well.

The band’s record company believes the band will appeal to women in their 40s rather than teenagers, but is convinced that it is a vast enough market for the act to succeed.

Nick Raphael, the managing director of Epic Records, an imprint of Sony BMG said: “We don’t really care about the youth audience in this. The normal target range of 16-24 years, which record companies normal chase, just aren’t going to think this is trendy but it doesn’t matter.”

Don Black, the Oscar winning lyricist of Sunset Boulevard, Bombay Dreams and Tell Me On A Sunday, last night welcomed the band’s arrival saying he hoped it would mark a return of the show tune to popular radio:

“People are often saying that musicals used to have loads of hit songs in them and they don’t write ‘em like that any more. Well, the truth is they do they just don’t play them like that any more,” he said.

from http://www.orange.co.uk/entertainment/news/29533.htm?linkfrom=feed_entertainment&link=link_4&article=showbiz about the album and love the pic he..he

New boyband Teatro are preparing to unleash their debut album.

The self-titled record features the backing of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with stellar arrangements of classic West End and Broadway favourites.

The album includes songs such as Maria from West Side Story, Don’t Cry For Me Argentina from Evita, I Dream a Dream from Les Miserables and Luck Be A Lady Tonight from Guys and Dolls.

Singer Simon Bailey said: ‘The thing with our sound is that is that its more poppy than that classical opera sound.

‘We really take the songs from the shows out of the shows to make them individual stand out tracks.’

Teatro’s debut album is out on Monday.

Goodman & Teatro Perform at WOS Awards Launch
Date: 23rd November 2007

The launch party for this year’s eighth annual Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards, the only major theatre prize-giving to be decided by members of the public, is shaping up to be the most star-studded to date. The event, at which all of those artists and shows in the awards running will be announced, takes place at Café de Paris at lunchtime on Friday 7 December 2007.

Concert entertainment

In addition to the previously announced Elaine Paige OBE, the “first lady of British musical theatre” (See News, 23 Nov 2007), guest presenters who will help us announce the shortlists are Michael Ball (currently starring in blockbuster Broadway musical import Hairspray), Roger Lloyd Pack (about to transfer to the West End in the Menier Chocolate Factory revival of Dealer’s Choice) and John Gordon Sinclair (soon to open in Alan Bennett’s Absurd Person Singular) and, on behalf of this year’s adopted charity Mousetrap Theatre Projects, Janie Dee (currently starring in Shadowlands opposite Charles Dance).

As part of the nominations presentation, a short concert celebrating musical contributions to the 2007 West End year will be held. In one of their first London stage performances, Teatro, impresario Jonathan Shalit’s new musical theatre answer to opera’s Il Divo, will sing Guys and Dolls standard “Luck Be a Lady” from their debut album, released on 26 November. The four-strong group comprises Stephen Rahman Hughes (of Bombay Dreams fame), Simon Bailey, Andrew Alexander and Jeremiah James. Teatro aims to capitalise on the mainstream interest generated in musical theatre by the success of this year’s duelling reality TV shows Any Dream Will Do and Grease Is the Word.

There was a piece in Metro on Friday. My mum usually reads it on the bus and brings it home to recycle after I’ve had a quick flick through but this time I kept it. Not sure if there’s a website with Metro articles so I’ll type it up in ase there isn’t

Teatro On Why Audiences Love Show Tunes

‘The audience for musical theatre never really went away but the modern resurgence of films including Moulin Rouge and Chicago, which swept the boards at the Osars, and TV series such as Any Dream Will Do, has rejuvenated its fan base for new generations. We’re a group who perform classic numbers from musicals and we’re finding that 14-year-olds to 40-year-olds love these songs.
As a group, our careers have run the gamut from dancing to rock music, in Britain and Broadway. When you’re singing musical theatre, you have to be very disciplined in how you take care of your voice. It’s not a very rock’n’roll lifestyle!
We originally considered about 50 different tracks for our album because the library of musical theatre is so overwhelming. We wanted songs that would work well away from the context of the stage. For the Royal Variety Performance earlier this week, we sang I Dreamed A Dream, from Les Misérables - it’s just a beautiful pop tune about angst, which anyone can connect with.
Show tunes stand the test of time because they’re emotional rollercoasters. And a lot of legendary shows are still going strong; The Phantom Of The Opera is still running in six countries. Of course, classic old musicals set the standard for the genre - ut’s like Led Zeppelin are the benchmark for rock’n’roll. But the “golden age” of musicals isn’t over - newer shows such as Wicked and Hairspray will be around for years because their songs leave audiences feeling a million dollars.
Unfortunately, musical theatre gets a bum rap at times because it doesn’t have the ultural cachet of opera, but show tunes have much more depth that they’re given credit for - they’re an absolutely gorgeous art form’

The article finishes with a pic and a mention that the album is out now.
Hope that there aren’t too many typos and that it’s useful

part 1:

Take the outstanding vocal talent of four good looking young men and a unique collection of timeless classics from musical theatre and you have all the ingredients for the success of Teatro.
The band evolved through a process of four hugely talented and like-minded singers – three British and one American – deciding that Teatro’s moment was at hand and fusing their talents, coming together through a happy mixture of invitation, recommendation and friendships.

Each had already achieved outstanding success in the West End or on Broadway - Simon Bailey for instance played the lead in Les Miserables and turned down the opportunity of appearing in Phantom Of The Opera to join the group which the singers believe will do for theatre music what Il Divo has done for opera.

We caught up with the boys (Stephen Rahman-Hughes, Jeremiah James, Andrew Alexander and Simon Bailey) to find out more about the group already being billed as theatreland’s first supergroup.

Your album is about to be released, what can we expect?
Stephen: The album has twelve immense tracks on it. Each one is a classic and an absolute joy to sing. They are very varied in style, some old and some much more contemporary but they have all been arranged for the four of us, creating a unique sound - the Teatro sound.

I think the blend of voices has given the songs a new twist and with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra bringing a lush, epic feel, it’s easy to get swept away into a magical fantasy. It’s a real sing-along album.

What is it about the album that you’re most proud of?
Stephen: I’m really proud of everyone who put their heart and soul into making a great album. There were so many people with the same passion and vision and the process was incredible. I made some amazing friends and feel so proud of the whole team. It’s quite freaky to hear the final product and think ‘Wow, that’s us. That’s our voices’.

Have you got a favourite track on the CD?
Stephen: That’s really hard - to pick just one. I love ‘I Dreamed Dream’, because it’s so tuneful and moving, I always get emotional when I sing it. Also I love singing ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ too as it’s great fun to sing and builds nicely, it gets quite soulful. I like different songs for different things but those two spring immediately to mind.

You’re covering a few songs that are traditionally associated with women. How have you adapted these for a male group?
Stephen: Yeah, we had to think long and hard about our song choices. Once we had tried our voices to those songs, we all agreed that the songs really worked. We’ve had to reinvent them to work for four guys but the songs stand up on their own; they’re just great songs and out of context of their shows, we’re very happy to sing them and make them our own.

What was it like performing ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’. Are you scared that you’ll be compared to Judy Garland’s classic original?
Stephen: Well, we can all agree that Judy’s version will always be number one. I’m sure when you hear our take on it you’ll enjoy it too. It’s such a beautiful song, with velvet harmonies. It’s definitely one of the prettiest songs on the album.

You’re being called a theatreland supergroup. What makes you guys stand out from the other classical ‘boybands’?
Andrew: Well, firstly we are not a ‘classical’ boyband. We don’t sing in an operatic or even classical way on the album and all our songs are in English (they are musical theatre numbers after all). We stand out from other bands, I think, because we are the only group that just sing showtunes. No one has done that since the Rat Pack were around in the sixties.

So how would you describe your style?
Andrew: Our style is one rooted in musical theatre - after all, that is our background. But we were very conscious when forming Teatro that singing showtunes as you would hear them on Broadway or the West End would limit its public appeal so we opted for a much more contemporary sound that wouldn’t sound out of place next to Michael Buble or even a Westlife track.

You’ve got the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra backing you. What was it like working with such a huge and famous orchestra?
Andrew: It was truly inspiring working with such a revered orchestra. I remember the first day we went to hear them record the orchestrations at Angel Studios. We were sitting by the sound desks when they started playing the arrangement for ‘I Am What I Am’ and we all just sat there in awe in silence for three minutes, blown away by a 70 piece orchestra playing the accompaniment for our album! Unforgettable.

part2 :

You’ve obviously got the triple threat of talent, looks and chemistry - how important do you think your rugged good looks are to your success?
Andrew: It’s all hours and hours of make-up unfortunately but so far as looks being important for success I would be naive to say they don’t matter, but out of those three - looks, chemistry and talent - ‘looks’ are by far the least important. Just think of all the boybands that flopped because they couldn’t sing or didn’t have that special ingredient - chemistry.

How does it change the dynamics of the group singing together rather than as solo artists – are you all secretly hankering after the limelight?
Simon: Not at all, the album is divided up generously between us and it is great to pull from my own experience and the experience of my very talented band mates to create a very exciting and innovative sound.

How did you guys all meet?
Simon: I had known Andrew since I was 13 as we both went to school together, Stephen I had met many times on the West End circuit and Jeremiah I met as we were all coming together in the workshop stage of Teatro.

So why the name Teatro?
Simon: We all found that, as experienced musical theatre performers, Teatro was a very elegant name for us and showed where we came from.

Gay men and musical theatre almost go hand in hand. Why do you think this is?
Simon: I think because gay men are generally less afraid to express their emotions and feelings, which is essentially what performers do when they sing as part of a performance, it can be an outpouring of grief or joy, which as a performer you have to be able to do with sincerity and I think that gay men can relate to that in a very accepting way.

Is it important to you to build up a gay following?
Jeremiah: Absolutely - I think the gay community by and large are very big supporters of the arts, and having them as fans would be an honour.

Have you performed at any gay events yet? Would you like to?
Jeremiah: Not with Teatro but I was, not too long back before Teatro, in Gayfest in NYC. I was in the NYC premier of a gay musical in which I played one of the two male leads and fell in love with another man and had a small love scene.....

As I’ve said before, you guys are an attractive bunch. Have you ever been chatted up by a guy before?
Jeremiah: Oh Sure, m best friend in the world is gay. I have been to gay clubs with him many times.

So have you ever been tempted?
Jeremiah: Never been tempted, but have been very flattered by the attention just the same.
