Been thinking and even tho it’s vanished (maybe for a reason, maybe not...)
I’m putting it back!!
So here it is…
Adelphi…
Where to start..?
It is the most catchy musical I have heard in ages, the cast especially Simon playing Thompson and Julie Atherton as Alice were fantastic!
So many funny moments that stay with you for ages afterward.
The first time Simon was on stage he was barely recognisable under the robes and headress (he was dressed kind of Arabian...altho not sure the shades were authentic hehe)
Favourite song was Take A Moment which moved me to tears...and unable to walk thru Liverpool without thinking of Thompson..
Thompson, a guy who after moving away from Liverpool to make his fortune in London, returned with tales taller than Andrew of all he’d been up to, when the reality was he was a thief.
Meeting up with Alice - who he’d grown up with - he realised how his wrong his path had taken him and he set about reforming to win her heart.
Alice managed to get him a job in the kitchens at the Adelphi where she worked and he worked his way up to a job in accounts. All the staff adored him (and why wouldn’t they! hehe) resulting in a comical moment during a song called Thompson From Accounts during which they all scooted their desks as close to him as they could. (again, do you blame them..?!)
Thompson decided to propose to Alice (lucky lady!) and couldn’t afford a ring...he told his mother of his plans and she handed him his grandmothers (I think..) ring so he could ask.
Which he did...but disappointment lay in store for poor Tommy - a Hollywood producer and his wife staying in the hotel had reported a ring stolen from them.
Alice due to Thompson’s past jumped to conclussions and accused him of the theft...he tried to explain but once she had the thought in her head she couldnt believe him…
Alice told him to leave
(ok this is where I admit to bawling during a musical, and to make it worse it wasn’t the only time during this one!)
After the dramatic and touching Next Ten Seconds sung by Alice about attempting to get over him came the song of all...Take A Moment.
Just before the song is sung Alice tries to return the ring to the Hollywood producer’s wife who informs Alice that altho they had been poor when they had been engaged it most certainly wasn’t their ring.
Alice dashes to Thompson’s mother who tells her that it was his grandmother’s ring (?) and he hadn’t lied.
Tommy’s mother then hands Alice a letter which she takes back to the Adelphi to read…
As she opens it and begins to read the words, Thompson from a higher point on stage sings the words… (I’ll put them here, but they’re rough as from my memory)
Take A Moment.
Grab a smile, they were meant for you and me
Fill your heart up to the brim
It’s true the best things in life are free
Yell if you can,
Laugh when you get the chance
Sing out that tune in your head
And always be the first one up to dance
Remember me some summer night in Liverpool
When every star above the dock’s a precious jewel
When moonlight on the mersey sends its silver to the sea
Watch for a while, and think of me
And in the chill of autumn, when the trees are bare
In Sefton park remember me, and I’ll be there
No matter where tomorrow takes us, carried on its tide
Think of me from time to time, and I’ll be at your side
Remember me when spring breaks out on Merseyside
When every kid on Hope street longs to play outside
And everytime you’re angry at the stupid things I’ve done
Remember how we had such fun
Snowballing in Falkner square, our noses blue
Strolling out along the front at Waterloo
Cheering to the heavens when we score the winning goal
This city beats inside of you, I love it heart and soul
Grab a smile, they were meant for you and me
Fill your heart up to the brim
It’s true the best things in life are free
Yell if you can,
Laugh when you get the chance
Sing out that tune in your head
And always be the first one up to dance
Sing out that tune
Sing out that tune
Sing out that tune in your head
and always be the first one up to dance
Only a few lines in and the tears poured down my face (apologies to Simon if he found it off putting lol)
Anyways...time passed by and he was off fighting in a civil war...suddenly he calls Alice while she’s at work and tells her to meet him on the roof of the Adelphi on their anniversary. He ends the call and dashes off.
Alice goes to the rooftop on the day....
And that’s all I’m saying as I hope some time soon everyone can see it and I am not spoiling the ending!!
Three more points to give a mention…
The FABULOUS song Showtune
I will never look at bins the same way again!!!
The horse in the Adelphi!
Ok it was a mechanical one as they couldn’t use a real one, but a great moment to watch for!
And
The rest of the cast!!!!
Esp. Tom Oakley and Helen Carter
Fantastic!
